The article dosen't give much detail but I know round me in deepest farmville we are concious of horses and cattle when on emergency and the policy is to turn everything off or at least turn the tunes off. If we come across a herd of anything on the road the best policy is to sit still and report back to control why you are taking your time, trying to hurry them on can only end in bother as in this unfortunate case.

A tragic, preventable incident. Thankfully I work mainly urban but we still get out into the sticks from time to time. Sheep are our main problem....and I'm not just talking about the management

Oddly animals on the road are a common problem in London.

We teach noises off, and consider turning off the blues too - you can cause chaos when you make a horse bolt....

I have to be honest we were never given any specific training on this, however I would have thought (hoped) that it was common sense of what to do.

There isn't really enough information in the story reported, but assumedly if the chap have been found guilty then there must be a fair amount of evidence to suggest negligence.

Whatever the incident getting there a few minutes later is better than not getting there at all.

At some point you did sign a declaration that you would maintain your knowledge of the highway code. It does come up on D1 and D2 papers sometimes....
